July 8th is National Blueberry Day!

These little blue gems are absolutely worth celebrating. 🫐 They're hitting their peak right now, and I'd argue there's no better time to fall in love with them all over again.

So let's talk about why this tiny fruit punches so far above its weight.

Don't let their size fool you. Blueberries are one of the most studied fruits in all of nutrition science, and the research keeps stacking up in their favor.

Their deep blue-purple color comes from anthocyanins, a type of plant compound with powerful antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects. And those compounds do REAL work in the body:

  • Heart health: Research links diets that include blueberries several times per week with a reduced risk of heart-related events, thanks to their effects on blood flow and arterial flexibility.

  • Brain & memory: The antioxidants in blueberries have been associated with protective effects on the brain, helping support memory and cognitive function over time.

  • Blood sugar & fiber: A single cup contains about 3.6 grams of fiber, which helps slow glucose absorption and moderate blood sugar levels.

  • Gut health: That same fiber feeds the beneficial bacteria in your gut, which influences nearly everything from digestion to mood.

If you want to go down the rabbit hole, this 2024 scientific review pulls together findings on blueberries and cardiovascular health, brain function, metabolic health, and more. The science is genuinely impressive.

A few fun facts to impress your friends:

  • Blueberries are one of the only truly blue foods found in nature.

  • Native Americans called them "star berries," because the blossom end of each berry forms a perfect little five-pointed star. 🌟

  • That dusty, pale coating on fresh blueberries? It's called the "bloom", a natural protective layer, and a sign of freshness.

Easy ways to enjoy them this season:

The BEST part about blueberries? You barely have to do anything to them. Here are my favorite ways to eat them:

  • Fresh by the handful: honestly the perfect snack, no prep required

  • Frozen: toss them straight into smoothies, or let them thaw over oatmeal (frozen are just as nutritious as fresh, sometimes more!)

  • Stirred into yogurt or overnight oats: a little burst of color and sweetness to start your day

  • Tossed into a salad: they're incredible with leafy greens, goat cheese, and a handful of nuts

  • Baked: into muffins, pancakes, or a simple crisp (let those July berries shine)

  • Simmered into a quick compote: a few minutes on the stove, and you've got a topping for everything from pancakes to ice cream

Here's my gentle challenge for you this week: Pick up a pint of blueberries (bonus points for local!) and find one new way to enjoy them.

How do you love your blueberries, ? Leave a comment and tell me, I'm always looking for new ideas!
