Produce Spotlight: Swiss Chard


Swiss chard is colorful dark leafy green (DLG), packed with nutrients and antioxidants. Swiss chard is an excellent source of over 9 vitamins and minerals, including vitamins A, K, C, E, magnesium, iron, copper, and potassium. Just one cup offers more than 4x your daily needs of vitamin K (essential for blood clotting) AND almost 4 grams of fiber. Making swiss chard, an excellent choice to support heart, blood and bone health.

Additionally, swiss chard offers several antioxidants including polyphenols, beta carotene, quercetin, kaempferol, rutin, and vitexin. Many of these antioxidants have been shown to offer powerful anti-inflammatory and anti-cancer properties.

Swiss chard shares many similarities with other DLGs such as collards and kale. However, swiss chard is more closely related to beets. In fact, swiss chard IS a cultivated form of beets, designed to grow without the root bulb (beet). Even more interesting, swiss chard is loved worldwide for its ability to thrive in less than optimal conditions (poor soil, low light/water).
