Produce Spotlight: Garlic

Garlic is such a common (yet clutch) ingredient, it is often viewed as ordinary. However, that couldn’t be further from the truth. It has extraordinary healing properties and is often referred to as “the wonder drug." Garlic has been used for thousands of years as medicine and in the culinary world. It is a member of the allium family and shares many of the healing benefits with its cousins - onions, chives and leeks.

Garlic is rich in selenium, vitamin C and B6. It enlivens meals, and can be infused into oils or used in healing teas and cough syrups. Garlic is an excellent antimicrobial, especially when used raw. It is a powerful immune booster as it helps to fight viruses and bacteria, particularly respiratory infections. Regular consumption of garlic has been associated with lower blood pressure, better blood sugar control, lower cholesterol, preventing heart disease, and reducing inflammation with arthritis.
