It's National Honey Month, and I am absolutely buzzing with excitement! Honey isn't just a delicious treat - it's a powerhouse of health benefits too! Below you will find some of my favorite (and untraditional) ways to use honey!
Honey is packed with antioxidants which protect your body from cell damage and may even lower your risk of certain diseases. Additionally, it has natural antibacterial properties, making it a sweet solution for soothing sore throats and calming coughs. Instead of purchasing over the counter medications, I love to use honey to make homemade medicines such as fire cider, honey bombs or cough syrup.
But wait, there's more! Honey can also be your secret weapon against seasonal allergies. By eating a few spoonfuls of honey regularly, you are exposing your body to a microdose of pollen which may prevent your body from overreacting when you are exposed to larger amounts of pollen. There’s one caveat, this only works if the pollen in your honey is from your area, so make sure to buy local honey from a beekeeper or at a farmer's market.
Finally, honey is great for wound healing! Its antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties make it amazing for soothing damaged and inflamed skin. Additionally, it is excellent for adding moisture to wounds and aids in scar prevention. Manuka honey, a type of medical grade honey, is the best type of honey for this type of job!
Now, here's a mind-blowing fact that'll make you appreciate bees even more: To produce just one pound of honey, a hive of bees must fly 55,000 miles and tap two million flowers! Talk about a busy bee!
So next time you drizzle honey on your toast or stir it into your tea, remember - you're enjoying the incredible work of thousands of bees. Let's give them a round of applause!
