I'm Living My Life It's Golden!

I have been getting the MOST beautiful locally grown fresh turmeric and ginger from my weekly produce delivery boxes courtesy of Get Fresh Daily. When you have an abundance of turmeric and ginger, what do you do? Make golden milk ( at least I do)!!! Of course, you’re probably wondering, what is golden milk…

Be warned - it is LIFE. Golden milk is a warm, yummy beverage that is just perfect for the cold weather. I don’t do coffee, so this is similar to a chai latte drink. I simmer whatever plant milk I have on hand, and add fresh ginger, turmeric, cinnamon, and other spices. It gets its name and golden hue from turmeric. Both fresh ginger and turmeric are nutrition powerhouses - they help keep you healthy by strengthening your immune system and protecting your cells from damage. Additionally, they have anti-inflammatory properties, so they are helpful to prevent chronic diseases and manage pain. Needless to say, golden milk is a delicious and nutritious beverage, especially in winter. You can adjust the spices to your liking and add the sweetener of your choice. I like honey or agave.

If you would like to give it a try, here's my recipe (I don't really measure, so these are estimations), adjust all the ingredients to your liking! Makes 1- 8 oz serving.

  • 8 oz milk of your choice

  • 1-inch fresh turmeric, grated (powder works too - I would start with 1.5 tsp)

  • 1-inch fresh ginger, grated (same as above)

  • 1 tsp cinnamon

  • pinch of nutmeg

  • pinch of cloves

  • pinch of black pepper (enhances the benefits of turmeric)

  • 1/4 tsp coconut oil (this is optional - it gives a creamier texture & helps with fat-soluble vitamin absorption)

  • Sweetener of choice

Directions: Warm milk in a pot, add turmeric, ginger and cinnamon, spices and oil. Stir and continue to warm for 2-3 minutes. Pour into a mug and sweeten to taste. Serve warm and enjoy!

P.S. Turmeric will stain your hands, so you may not want to do with a fresh manicure! Washing your hands and adding lemon juice can help minimize the stain.
